Palestinian teen and mother held in custody over goading of IDF soldiers

A Druze soldier attacked and beaten by other soldiers is seen at hospital

They circulated pictures of Ahed when she was a little girl raising a fist in front of Israeli soldiers.

A Palestinian girl who was caught on video slapping a soldier in the Israeli-occupied West Bank has been remanded in custody until Thursday, the police said on Tuesday.

After a video showing three Palestinian women attacking IDF soldiers went viral, Israeli security forces arrested 16-year-old Ahed Tamimi, who was involved in the incident, in a raid on Monday night. However, the servicemen did not oblige the girls, and refrained from retaliating throughout the encounter.

This morning, at 4, the Israeli armed forces stole the family's cameras and telephone, beat the son, and arrested Ahed.

Many Israelis have long complained that restrictive rules of engagement permit Palestinian Arabs to molest IDF soldiers with impunity.

Bassem al-Tamimi, Ahed's father and an activist opposing the Israeli settlements in Al-Nabi Saleh, confirmed his daughter's arrest on Facebook.

Hours after the pre-dawn raid, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman vowed to exact a price from the girl, her family, and her village. "The investigation reveals that the commander of the force, who was given operational judgment, acted professionally by not getting dragged into violence".

In 2012, Ahed was awarded with "Hanzala Courage Award" by Basaksehir municipality in Istanbul for challenging Israeli soldiers, who had arrested her brother.

Shot on Friday, the video shows the suspect Ahed Tamimi and another Palestinian teen approaching two Israeli soldiers - then shoving, kicking and slapping them while the soldiers remained relatively impassive before moving backwards.

Though the video has been hailed by Tamimi's supporters as a fearless act in the struggle of the Palestinian people, the viral video has also been used by pro-Israel voices who instead saw the clash as a display of "IDF restraint and professionalism", the Post reported.
