Sen. Markey presses Congress to extend CHIP

The program, which began in 1997, now funds health insurance for more than eight million children nationwide.

"I strongly support the CHIP program, which helps thousands of West Virginia children stay healthy". However, because of the way it uses its share of CHIP funding, Minnesota has not been hit as hard (more on that in a bit). The disagreement is over how to pay for it.

CHIP covers about 27,000 Missouri kids each month and about 88,000 at some point each year. Funding for the CHIP program ran out in October.

That's preferable to inaction, but it also kicks the can down the road.

Across the country, almost 9 million children are affected.

ALL Kids is a low-priced, comprehensive healthcare coverage program for children under age 19.

CHIP provides free or low-priced health insurance options for children in families who earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid but do not have access to health coverage through other means. The funding deadline for CHIP was September 30, but the program was overlooked due to lawmakers' focus.

The stop-gap spending bill signed by President Donald Trump on Friday, Dec. 9, lets the federal government distribute the remaining funds in the CHIP account to the states in the most dire straits, including Pennsylvania, but it doesn't authorize any more funding.

CHIP received $16.6 billion in the 2017 federal budget, according to NBC News, and it serves more than 8 million children across the country. He hopes Congress can negotiate funding for at least three or four years. This is not a hypothetical - about two million CHIP kids have serious chronic conditions. Congress is not doing its job, and it hasn't been for months.

The Trump administration is guaranteeing Texas $135 million to continue helping more than 450,000 uninsured children and pregnant women if Congress does not renew authorization for the Children's Health Insurance Program.

"Without federal funding, more than 180,000 children in Pennsylvania could be without health care in early 2018". But the state would have to pay to keep coverage for the remaining 79,000 children.

But the Children's Health Insurance Plan went mainstream this week.

On Tuesday's Smart Talk, we discuss the role of CHIP in aiding low-income Pennsylvanians and the impact of defunding the program on the state's youth with Jim Willshier, Director of Policy & Partnership with the Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers and Jennifer Englerth, CEO of Family First Health.
