Facebook lets people know when their photos pop up

Facebook Facial Recognition Wants to Manage Your Identity

In its newest feature, announced on Tuesday, social media giant Facebook disclosed that it can now let you know when a photo of you has been posted - even if you don't get tagged in the photo.

A picture illustration shows a Facebook logo reflected in a person's eye, in Zenica, March 13, 2015. The new feature dubbed as "Photo Review" uses facial recognition technology to identify photos of users. Privacy laws are generally stricter in those jurisdictions, though the company said it was hopeful about implementing the feature there in the future. Although this is the first official announcement that the company is moving more intensely towards facial technology - and perhaps farther away from previous forms of individual security as it skews more towards control over one's presence - facial recognition has always been a part of Facebook's platform. In September, Apple Inc revealed that users of its new iPhone X would be able to unlock the device using their face.

"If you're in a photo and are part of the audience for that post, we'll notify you, even if you haven't been tagged", Candela said in a blog post. That feature also is optional. After that, it will generate a string of numbers or templates to compare with other photos or videos that are uploaded to Facebook's systems by someone else.

Alongside the photo alerts, Facebook is using the same facial recognition tech for profile photo safety.

The latest feature from Facebook gives users options to tag themselves, remain untagged, or report the photo to Facebook.

The feature builds on technology Facebook already uses to suggest tags or labels for people in photos users post, Rob Sherman, the company's deputy chief privacy officer, said in an interview.

However, the thought that Facebook will be scanning every photo may not be acceptable to some.

"What we're doing with AI is making it possible for anybody to enjoy the experience", says 52-year-old King, who lost his sight in college due to a degenerative eye disease and now works at Facebook as an accessibility specialist. "We decided, in consultation with privacy advocates and people, that the best approach for this offering was to notify people on Facebook and provide a way to adjust it in their account settings at any time".
