Top Miss America Leaders Resign Amid Email Scandal

Sam Haskell Miss Universe

In its own statement Thursday night, the Miss America Organization said that Haskell, who earns $500,000 a year as CEO, had apologized to the board for his comments. Also on Saturday, President Josh Randle and Chairman Lynn Weidner resigned.

Haskell said in a statement Friday that he would abide by the suspension, but denounced the Huffington Post article that revealed the internal emails as "unkind and untrue".

In the emails reported by HuffPost, Haskell jokes about renaming former Miss America winners, now labeled by the organization as "Forever Miss Americas, "C-s" and calls former winners a "pile of malcontents and has beens who blame the program for not getting them where they think they can go".

"The Board thanks Lynn and Sam for many years of tireless work for, and significant financial support to, both the Miss America Organization and thousands of young women who received millions of dollars of educational scholarships from the Organization as a direct result of their efforts".

The scandal began Thursday, when the Huffington Post published leaked emails showing pageant officials ridiculing past Miss Americas, including crass and sometimes vulgar comments about them.

One day after being suspended, CEO Sam Haskell resigned on Saturday from his position, which reportedly paid almost $500,000 a year. While the board approved Haskell's resignation, Randle and Weidner will remain in their positions for a transition period.

In another exchange from August 2014, Haskell forwarded an email that said Hagan's hairdresser had been commenting on Hagan's sex life, as well as her recent weight gain to Miss America telecast lead writer Lewis Friedman and noted, "Not a single day passes that I am not told some disgusting story about Mallory".

Friedman ended the email with, "P.S".

"My hope is that this story that broke will bring light to the type of behaviour that's been in leadership of the Miss America Organisation and really help us put in place some people who care and who embody the mission of Miss America", Ms Hagan said in a Twitter video.

Republican Sen. -elect Chris Brown, who represents the city as part of the Second Legislative District, said, "This is the right move for everyone involved including the image of Atlantic City, considering the pageant was created and thrived becoming synonymous with Atlantic City for nearly a century".

The outgoing chairwoman of the Miss America Organization says she was "unjustly vilified" following an email scandal that targeted former Miss Americas.

By then, it was too little too late as the MAO moved swiftly to remove him, Weidner, and Randle.

"I don't think it's the end", Cameron told The Washington Post.

"Happy Birthday to me!" she said, but "there is still more housekeeping to do".

Hagan moved back to Alabama past year.
