Giants' Collins sorry for alluding to Apple as 'a cancer'

Landon Collins calls teammate Eli Apple a'cancer in the Giants locker room

On Wednesday morning, Apple and Collins were called into the office of interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo.

And now Collins, who never referred to Apple by name but made clear who the player was, said in the interview that the former Ohio State standout is a "Cancer" and needs to be cut from the Giants.

Collins has since apologized for his comments. He and Apple met separately with Spagnuolo and then all three talked.

"But that first pick. he's a cancer".

Apple has played in 11 games this season, starting seven of those, but only featured on special teams in last Sunday's 23-0 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals, with Brandon Dixon and Ross Cockerell selected ahead of Apple.

That doesn't mean Collins' sentiment regarding Apple was off base.

"I apologized for the things I said yesterday", the Pro Bowl safety posted on Twitter.

And the criticism has continued this year, with Apple "critiqued more vociferously than any other player" in a film session after the Giants' Nov. 12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, and with him "almost walking out on the team" and getting benched as a result.

The Giants host the Washington Redskins (7-8) on Sunday in their season finale.

An NJ.com report over the weekend detailed personal issues as the forefront for an explanation on Apple's attitude and season - which includes a falling out with his stepfather. NY is in the process of interviewing general manager candidates following the firing of Jerry Reese and head coach Ben McAdoo on December 4.

At 2-13, NY has more losses than any other season in its history. Apple was declared inactive for a game shortly after his mother underwent brain surgery.

Those are some strong comments, but they're also somewhat understandable considering the criticism Apple's play has taken this season.
