LG&E, KU To Assist In Puerto Rico Power Restoration Mission

The trucks will head to Lake Charles, La., where they'll be loaded onto barges to cross the Gulf of Mexico. Following the expected arrival of this restoration equipment in Puerto Rico in mid-January, Ameren is planning for its co-workers to be on the ground contributing to the relief effort shortly thereafter, as part of a contingent of 1,500 additional personnel arriving from the mainland.

That group will work for 20 days, at which point they will be swapped out for another group of 50 that will work for another 20 days.

About 80 workers from DTE Energy are heading to Puerto Rico to help restore power there.

Much of Puerto Rico still is without electric and cell phone service.

Working with PREPA, FEMA, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the IMTs are focused on completing a full damage assessment of Puerto Rico's energy grid to develop an updated and more closely coordinated restoration plan.

The storm devastated Puerto Rico's infrastructure, leaving parts of the island without power for at least three months.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency reports on its website that power has been restored to 65.4 percent of the unincorporated USA territory since Maria ravaged the US territory.

"Our mission is to help improve lives and today Puerto Rico needs our help", Kable said.

"Providing support to fellow electric companies in need is a hallmark of our industry, and I am very proud of our unique mutual assistance program", Tom Kuhn, president of the Edison Electric Institute, said.
