Longtime Atlanta anchor, Amanda Davis, dies after suffering massive stroke

Amanda Davis

TV anchor Amanda Davis has passed away at the age of 62, with the Emmy award-winning journalist suffering a fatal stroke on her way to her stepfather's funeral yesterday [27 December].

FOX 5 spoke to a close friend of Davis who said she had a medical emergency at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

It wasn't immediately understood to what degree Davis' death may have been attributable to her drinking problem and what health woes her addiction may have caused.

Several people across the country have sounded off on social media, offering condolences and sharing memories of the beloved anchor. She was rushed to a hospital and underwent treatment there before she died Wednesday.

Davis retired from WAGA-TV in 2012 after a driving under the influence-related arrest, according to the Journal-Constitution. And she marveled over the three-part series Davis did in 2016 about her alcoholism.

Davis had also shared a Facebook post about celebrating Christmas after losing a loved one.

He said her colleagues were still struggling to deal with the news on Thursday.

She wrote about the importance of sharing her story to help others and appreciating second and third chances in a piece for CBS 46.

"'I'm glad she was able to make the comeback she did, ' said former 11Alive anchor Brenda Wood".

"I was saddened to hear about the passing of Amanda Davis". A statement on the station's website said Davis' "family is asking for privacy at this hard time". "I'm here to say I fell down, hard, but I got back up".

She also worked to find permanent homes for Georgia foster care children and began this community project in 1997 with a series called "Home for the Holidays" in which 32 children were placed in homes in the first year.
