Unemployment rates rise in Dutchess

Capital Region jobless rate rises as more look for jobs

The state's area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, according to the report, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in NY state each month.

Unemployment in the Lake Charles Metropolitan Area was 3.3 percent in October, compared to 4.5 percent in June. Ripley County reported 3.5 percent and Franklin County ended November with 3.6 percent, Dearborn County had 3.7 percent and Switzerland County had 3.8 percent.

Jobless rates in neighboring counties in November, with October rates in parentheses, were: Allen, 4.2 percent (4.5 percent); Hardin, 4.1 (4.4); Henry, 3.8 (4); Putnam, 3 (3); Seneca, 3.9 (4.2); Wood, 3.6 (3.9); and Wyandot, 3.1 (3.2).

The local unemployment rate was 5.3 percent last month, up from 4.7 percent in November 2016.The statewide unemployment rate fell last month from 4.8 percent to 4.7 percent.

The state and national unemployment rates both remained unchanged with Idaho at 2.9 and the country 4.1. The amount of people employed and unemployed has also not changed, so the labor force for this county remains at 24,500.

Out of the civilian labor force of 75,085 (people 16 and older working or looking for work), 2,849 were unemployed, the report states. Leisure and Hospitality employment continued to grow by adding 8,000 jobs in November.

In November, 7,765 people were unemployed, 495 fewer than in October, and 661 fewer than in November 2016, the department said. Manufacturing is one of the major employment sectors in the county.

The number of those on the job actually increased by 201 from October, but that was offset by the increase in the number unemployed, which rose from 1,223 to 1,277.

Over the past 12 months, the largest gains in the private sector were in private eduction and health services (up 600), retail (up 500), and construction (up 500). Four counties were at or above 5 percent — Clearwater, 6 percent; Shoshone, 5.5 percent; Lewis, 5.5 percent; and Adams, 5 percent. The number of claimants dropped 19 percent from a weekly average of 5,400 a year ago to 4,400.

Over the year, Idaho total nonfarm jobs increased 2.3 percent — 16,200 higher than 2016. Madison Countys unemployment rate remained the lowest at 2 percent.
