At least 20 people are dead in Iran's bloody week of protests

Armed Forces Spokesman: US Plotting New Sedition in Iran

The highest-ranking USA official's direct expression of support for rioters in recent protests in Iran and the supportive voices by a number of other governments and Western media outlets reveal that the U.S. had plans for inciting a sedition inside Iran, Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri said on Monday.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel expressed concern on January 1 about the death of protesters and urged the Iranian government to respect people's rights.

"Mr. Rohani says it's free for people to protest but we're scared of speaking". "Our nation will deal with this minority who chant slogans against the law and people's wishes, and insult the sanctities and values of the revolution".

The demonstrations - the largest to hit Iran since the protests around the disputed 2009 election - began in Mashhad, apparently over rising food prices, and expanded to several cities.

"The support rendered by the highest-ranking official of the USA regime along with a number of governments and arrogant powers' media, including the BBC, to the rioters indicates that the United States has plotted to foment a new sedition in Iran but it will bring nothing but humility and failure for the enemies of the Islamic Revolution", General Jazzayeri said.

Two more, including a teenage boy, were run down and killed by a fire engine stolen by protesters in the western town of Dorud on Sunday - a story emphasised on state television.

Video posted on social media showed demonstrators attacking a police station in the central town of Qahderijan.

Ali Shamkhani, Iranian Supreme National Security Council secretary, blamed the violence on social media and said some foreign countries were interfering in his country's domestic affairs.

It wasn't clear whether the Revolutionary Guard member was the same fatality report late Monday night by Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency.

Iranian authorities have reportedly arrested hundreds of demonstrators in recent days. There have been reports of the regime blocking access to major social media websites in an attempt to curb the online activity of dissenters. If confirmed, it would be the first reported fatality among security forces during the widespread unrest.

USA president Donald Trump backed the demonstrators, saying they were right to make a stand.

"Iran is failing at every level despite the bad deal made with them by the Obama administration", Mr Trump said, referring to the nuclear pact agreed under his predecessor Barack Obama.

Nine people were killed overnight in unrest related to protests in the Isfahan region of central Iran, according to the state broadcaster.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iranians had the right to criticize authorities but also warned of a crackdown.

Iran is failing at every level despite the bad deal made with them by the Obama Administration.

"We call on the government to respect demonstrators' freedom of assembly and their right to give voice their opinion freely and peacefully", Gabriel said.

Both apps were used by activists to organise the demonstrations and share images and information.

The anti-government rallies were also countered by equally massive pro-government demonstrations.

Meanwhile, Bahrain became the first Arab Gulf state to issue a travel warning for Iran.

Demonstrators took the streets for a fifth straight day of marches that have broken out in cities across the country.

Iran's intelligence ministry released a statement saying "instigators" have been identified "and will be dealt with seriously soon".
