Pak slams U.S. envoy over Trump's accusation of aiding terrorism

Trump Accuses Pakistan Of 'Lies And Deceit,' Threatens To Pull Billions In Aid

The Countrywide condemnation of US President Donald Trump's anti-Pakistan tweet doesn't seem getting alleviated soon, and now the Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir also rejected the notion of Pakistan having safe havens for terrorists.

Pakistan summoned U.S. ambassador in Islamabad late Monday and lodged protest over U.S. President Donald Trump's tweet in which he doubted Pakistan's role against terrorism, according to local reports.

The US embassy confirmed that ambassador Hale was summoned by the foreign office at 9pm.

Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua sought an explanation from Hale over Trump's remarks, The Express Tribune reported.

Commenting on the tweet, Dastagir said Pakistan had extended unprecedented cooperation to the United States for eliminating Al-Qaeda from its soil and Afghanistan, besides fighting the war against terrorism.

She told the USA envoy that Pakistan has taken action against all militants' groups without any discrimination and regretted that her country's sacrifices are being ignored.

Replying to a query, he said it was Pakistan's mistake to provide bases to the US.

Officials in the country's capital scrambled to arrange a cabinet meeting to be held Tuesday to adopt a response to the Twitter attack, while Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said in an interview on Geo Television that the country is ready to publicly provide an accounting of "every detail" of USA aid it has received.

"Pak as anti-terror ally has given free to U.S.: land & air communication, military bases & intel cooperation that decimated Al-Qaeda over last 16yrs, but they have given us nothing but invective & mistrust".

Pakistan does not have any safe havens for terrorists, he said. They overlook cross-border safe havens of terrorists who murder Pakistanis.

The tense exchanges followed days of speculation that the Trump administration - dissatisfied with the way Pakistan has dealt with the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani network and other terrorist groups - was set to dramatically reduce aid to the South Asian nation.
