North Korea Accidentally Hit One of Their Own Cities With a Missile

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un loves to repeatedly display his country's nuclear reach by conducting frequent ballistic missile tests, even if his own citizens become collateral damage of those experiments.

The Diplomat noted that a failed launch might explain why North Korea used Sinpo, a seaside town, to conduct at least two test launches for the Hwasong-12 missile - an errant missile crashing into the sea would be less risky than one hitting a populated area.

In the war of words that followed, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un threatened to launch a missile strike on the USA with President Donald Trump then responding in kind, saying that he did not rule a military solution to the conflict. Notably, the satellite images from Google Earth taken after the crash show a clear area.

The missile crashed within minutes after taking off, in the city of Tokchon in North Korea, damaging industrial and agricultural buildings near the vicinity of the crash site.

The North Korean missile was launched on April 28, last year, from Pukchang Airfield in South Pyongan Province. And this missile is one Kim Jong-un has bragged about - remember the military parade with missiles ushered down the streets of Pyongyang in April?

In February 2017, North Korea successfully fired a booster rocket in what was seen by the world as a ballistic missile test, resulting in a new series of sanctions imposed upon Pyongyang by the UN Security Council. The Hwasong-12 is a liquid fuel missile which uses combination of hypergolic propellant and oxidizer.

The Diplomat exclusively reported on the location of the missile crash, which was in Tokchon, a city that has a population of about 200,000 North Koreans.

The unnamed source said the missile may have been destined to go down in the Sea of Japan, near the Russian coast, where its first Hwasong-12 test rocket landed in May 2017.

There are fears that the likelihood of similar incidents occurring over Pyongyang, the country's capital, remains high.

In November, North Korea test-fired its most powerful Inter-continental ballistic missile yet which experts said is likely capable of striking nearly anywhere on earth.

In his News Year's speech televised nationally, Kim stated: "The United States can never fight a war against me and our state".

The intermediate-range ballistic missile, or IRBM, is capable of reaching the US territory of Guam. "North Korea is putting considerable faith in the guidance systems of these missiles".

Moon has also seized the opportunity of mending fences with North Korea.
