Mo Salah wins the 2017 African best player award

Mohamed Salah

On Thursday it was announced that his heroics on the pitch have earned him the 2017 African player of the year award. In a clutch World Cup qualifying game against DR Congo, he scored two, including a extra-time penalty, to secure Egypt's place at the finals for the first time since 1990.

"I am very proud to be here".

"I have always wanted to be here".

Although he struggled to break into a star-studded Chelsea side, the current Liverpool forward believed at the time he would one day land CAF's prestigious award for the best player in Africa.

Salah, 25, was presented with the trophy by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmad at the International Conference Centre in Accra, Ghana.

Having moved from Roma last summer, Salah was brought in by Liverpool for a pretty big fee of £35million. "We are close friends and we help each other to reach the best for us and the team".

On the global stage he was hugely instrumental in both Egypt's Africa Cup of Nations success - the North African team made it to the final - and also World Cup qualification for the Pharaohs.

On his move from AS Roma, the Egyptian stated, "I have had two wonderful season with Roma and I was very happy over there. After returning, I have proved to everyone what I can do, and I am still working hard to maintain that".

At the CAF Awards in Accra, Ghana on Thursday, the Egypt global beat his Liverpool teammate and Senegal worldwide Sadio Mane and Borussia Dortmund Gabonese forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
