United States cancer death rates are dropping

That gap is narrowing, but, according to the report, the improvements apply mostly to older Americans, 'likely in part due to universal health care access for seniors through Medicare, ' the American Cancer Society said in its press release.

'This new report reiterates where cancer control efforts have worked, particularly the impact of tobacco control, ' said Dr Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. For more than two decades, the rate of Americans dying from cancer has dropped every year.

New cancer cases are still predicted to affect more than 1.7 million people in 2018, but as smoking falls out of fashion and detection and treatment technologies improve, the U.S. can expect to see survival rates continue to improve. While the diminishment in cigarette smoking has pushed down death rates, "tobacco stays by a long shot the main source of malignancy passings today, in charge of nearly 3 of every 10 tumor passings".

Cancer is still a destructive blight on American society, however, and is estimated to have killed 158.6 per 1,000 people diagnosed with the disease in 2015. Declines in lung and colorectal cancers were offset by increasing or stable rates for breast, uterine corpus, and thyroid cancers and for melanoma.

"Advancing the fight against cancer for all citizens requires broader application of existing cancer control knowledge, including smoking cessation and the increased uptake of cancer-preventing cervical and colorectal cancer screening and HPV vaccination, across all segments of the population, with an emphasis on disadvantaged groups", researchers conclude in the report. Among black Americans, cancer mortality is 14 percent higher than it is among whites.

Among Americans more youthful than 65, the death rate was just about a third higher among blacks than whites - with considerably bigger variations in many states. In 2015, the percent shows a fall of 1.7 percent.

Cancers of the breast, prostate and colon and rectum are also down steeply.

"Black women get breast cancer, on average, five to seven years younger than white women, so our cancers are detected later, and when they're more advanced", Goler Blount said. Cancer mortality was lower for blacks than whites in MA among all ages and in NY among those 65 and older, but higher in the District of Columbia, Wisconsin, Kansas, Louisiana, Illinois, and California.
