Tamil Nadu bus strike continues for fourth day; commuters left stranded

The buses stand still at Koyambedu Mofussil Bus terminus following the flash strike by the Transport Employees

The Madras High Court on Friday ruled that the striking bus drivers in Tamil Nadu should go back to work immediately. "Recourse to lighting strikes or flash strikes without notice leads to the consequences of denying the citizens of their right to free movement and is clearly illegal and against the public interest", the judge said while passing interim orders on a PIL filed in this regard. "The authorities allocated a bus to me and I drove on more than eight routes". The trade unions demand a 2.57 percent hike while the government insisted on 2.44 percent hike. We will once again meet at 5 pm today and intensify the strike till the government agrees for our proposals.

'Those who don't come to work and cause hardship to the public must face the consequences, ' the court told the drivers. "This wage agreement had the highest revision proposed, where the minimum was Rs 2,684 while the highest was Rs 11,361", the Minister said. "I thought it was my duty to work for the people", said Mr Rajakrishnan, who is a first-time MLA from Andhiyur. If the government takes action, the employees must face it. "If they fail to do so, as per the law, departmental action will be initiated against them".

Earlier, Chief Minister E Palaniswamy chaired a meeting of ministers and senior officials to take stock of the situation, even as opposition parties including the DMK and the Left, besides actor Kamal Haasan, urged the government to end the stalemate by holding talks with trade unions.

In Thoothukudi district, more than 75% buses were off the road, much to the discomfort of rural people who had to rely on private buses. The auto fare is so high, I can not afford it.

Ten unions had announced launching the strike on Thursday after collapse of talks on wage revision.

The indefinite strike was announced after the peace talks between the government and unions failed yesterday for the eleventh time.

With the majority of the workers going on strike, the transport corporations could operate only skeleton bus services with the helps drivers affiliated with the ruling AIADMK's union and private drivers for the operation.
