Steve Bannon Apologizes For Anti-Trump Comments in Michael Wolff Book

Trump Makes 'Remarkable Spectacle' As Self-Proclaimed 'Stable Genius,' Then 'Embarrassing' Pops Up On Twitter

WASHINGTON-Former Trump senior strategist Stephen Bannon apologized Sunday for his role in a new book critical of the Trump administration as senior White House officials sharpened the administration's attack on it.

While the book suggests Mr Trump lacks intellectual curiosity, Mr Pompeo said: "The president is engaged, he understands the complexity, he asks really hard questions of our team at the Central Intelligence Agency".

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency, " he said in the statement to the news web site.

The CNN interview quickly grew heated.

A day earlier, pushing back at Wolff's suggestion that he lacked stability, Trump called himself a "very stable genius".

In a much more measured interview on Fox News Sunday, Trump's former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski called the book "a complete fabrication". Miller criticized CNN's coverage, and CNN host Jake Tapper pressed Miller to answer his questions.

Trump, asked about a New York Times report that his aides had pressured Attorney General Jeff Sessions not to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation, said: "Everything I've done has been 100 percent proper".

In "Fire and Fury", Bannon faulted Trump Jr., former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Trump's adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, for taking the meeting with the Russians during the presidential campaign and not reporting it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Later that evening, the president was on Twitter at Camp David, the presidential countryside retreat, slamming the author of a new book about him as a "total loser" and describing a former top adviser's firing as being "dumped like a dog". "Watch the hatred and unfairness of this CNN flunky!"

"Whether he realized it was an interview or not, I don't know, but it certainly was not off the record", said Wolff.

Chatter about Mr Trump's mental fitness for office has intensified in recent months on cable news shows and among Democrats in Congress.

Wolff added that Trump's eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, who also serves as a White House senior adviser, have placed blame on the president for the couple's legal quagmire. The staff was also "painfully aware" that Trump repeated the same stories over and over, sometimes in 10-minute intervals, according to the book. The White House has called the publication "fiction".

"If he was unfit, he probably wouldn't be sitting there and wouldn't have defeated the most qualified group of candidates the Republican Party has ever seen", she said, calling him "an incredibly strong and good leader".

"I went to the best colleges, or college", he told reporters.

Wolff told NBC on Sunday that "I truly do not want to say the president is a liar", but that he had indeed spoken with Trump for about three hours during and since the campaign.

I guess sloppy Steve brought him in the White House quite a bit and it was one of those things.
