SpaceX successfully launches secret U.S. government spacecraft in first mission of 2018

Elon Musk has announced SpaceX will launch'the world's most powerful rocket later this month with his own electric car on board. The Falcon Heavy'megarocket will fire beyond orbit from the former Apollo 11 moon rocket launchpad at the Kenn

Elon Musk's SpaceX has sent a secret USA government spacecraft codenamed Zuma towards an undisclosed orbit. The Falcon 9 rocket will now deliver the satellite into orbit.

The payload will be delivered to low Earth orbit, per the mission parameters, but we don't know anything else about its goal, design, or intended mission, because it's all classified.

For example, SpaceX's launch of a top-secret space drone last September was disclosed as a Boeing (BA) X-37B for the Air Force. SpaceX has launched a secret satellite codenamed Zuma on its first flight of the new year.

Last year, SpaceX carried out 18 successful launches, the highest in any calendar year.

Northrop shares were virtually unchanged at 308.30 on the stock market today. A few minutes later the first-stage of the Falcon 9 rocket booster successfully landed at LZ-1, or Landing Zone 1.

The launch was delayed from November so SpaceX, founded by Tesla's (TSLA) Elon Musk, could analyze data from the protective nose cone from another launch.

SpaceX now can look forward to its next major test for the year - launching its huge heavy-duty rocket for the first time ever.

The Falcon heavy, capable of carrying a payload of more than 54 tons, will set off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
