Quake in Caribbean prompts tsunami warning; no deaths reported

Tsunami alert after magnitude 7.6 earthquake rocks Caribbean Sea north of Honduras

A 7.6 magnitude natural disaster struck the Caribbean Sea Tuesday night, and the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami was possible for nearby islands, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The warnings for the disaster-hit countries were short lived.

Caribbean leaders have announced the activation of emergency systems after an natural disaster that struck near remote islands belonging to Honduras.

The quake rattled window in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa over 320 miles away and was also felt as far as Mexico.

The epicenter was located 202 kilometers from the Honduran town of Barra Patuca, and 245 kilometers from the municipality of Puerto Lempira in Honduras.

The quake was.6 magnitude larger than the 7.0 natural disaster that devastated Haiti in 2010.

Nine other earthquakes of magnitude 6 or larger have occurred within 400 km of the January 9, 2018 event over the preceding century.

Honduran President Juan Orlando tweeted, "In face of the quake registered in our country, we have activated the emergency system, please remain calm, report any emergency to @ 911Honduras".

Other than cracks in some buildings in the region, no other damage or injuries were reported.

After the natural disaster, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an advisory, warning areas like Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands of a potential tsunami. The quake that devastated Haiti was magnitude 7.0.
