'Temperatures are forecast to fall rapidly': Icy conditions prompt special weather statement

A Winter Weather Advisory that includes Asheville Greenville and Spartanburg will be in effect from 5 a.m. through 1 p.m. Monday

The below-freezing temperatures are expected to arrive in the GTA after noon on Friday.

Dense fog patches have been observed across portions of northeastern Ontario today. However, in some areas, especially in valleys, the freezing drizzle may last into overnight.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement in effect for part of the region and surrounding areas. "Rain changing to snow tonight with a hard freeze". Visibility may occasionally be reduced to near zero.

Environment Canada says that rain is expected to become more widespread tonight and into Friday. Snowfall amounts of 10 cm are likely for areas close to lake Superior with only a few cm of snow in other areas.

Environment Canada said people should continue to monitor alerts and forecasts it may issue.

"A very strong cold front will cross northeastern Ontario tonight".

"Following the passage of the front, rain will change to snow and there will be a hard freeze as temperatures plummet".

Flash freeze warnings are issued when a rapid drop in temperature is expected, that can cause water from rain or melted snow on streets and sidewalks to quickly freeze.

Travellers were advised to be prepared for slippery driving conditions and to adjust travel plans appropriately.
