Google Expanding Cloud Network with Three New Undersea Cables

Both are consortium cables, whereas Curie is Google's private cable linking Los Angeles and Chile.

One of the cables is called Havfrue and will directly link the U.S.to Ireland and Denmark.

According to the search giant, its Netherlands and Montreal cloud computing center will be operational in the first-quarter of 2018, followed by the centers in Finland, Hong Kong and Los Angeles.

A second cable, which will run from the USA east coast to Denmark, with a stopover in Ireland, will be 7242 kms in length.

"At Google, we have spent $30bn improving our infrastructure over three years, and we're not done yet".

Google will commission three new undersea cables in 2019 in a substantial expansion of its global infrastructure. It now has 15 regions made up of 44 zones. While each of those companies will have different uses for the cable, Google plans to use it to boost its network's resiliency in the northern Atlantic region. It's building its own cable to connect Los Angeles and Chile, which Google said made it the first non-telecom company to build an intercontinental cable on its own. The HK-G, an acronym for Hong Kong-Guam, is another consortium cable interconnecting major subsea communication hubs in Asia.

"Together, these investments further improve our network-the world's largest-which by some accounts delivers 25 percent of worldwide internet traffic". This means companies in these regions who leverage Google's Cloud Platform for their server capacity in these regions will experience higher performance and fewer service disruptions.

Google's Cloud platform is already up and running in thirteen regions including Tokyo, Taiwan, Mumbai, Singapore, Sydney, London, Belgium, Frankfurt, Sao Paulo, Oregon, Iowa, Northern Virginia, and SC. By owning the cable, Google gets to decide the design and construction process, it can fully define the cable's technical specifications, streamline deployment, deliver service to users and customers faster, and make routing decisions that optimise for latency and availability. "From datacentres to subsea cables, Google is committed to connecting the world and serving our cloud customers", he said.

They join eight additional cables in which Google has direct investment, as well as many more from which the company leases capacity.
