China to continue all-out rescue of missing foreign sailors: FM

Japan sees little chance of the oil spill from a stricken Iranian tanker that sank on Sunday in the East China Sea reaching its shores, an official at the nation's environment ministry said on Tuesday.

The tanker that had been burning for more than a week sank on Sunday, the Chinese Transportation Ministry said. Condensate is highly toxic but readily evaporates or burns off in a fire.

The CF Crystal suffered limited damage and the 21 crew members, all Chinese nationals, were rescued by a passing fishing trawler on Saturday night, according to a report posted by state-owned Xinhua News to its Twitter account on Tuesday.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has called for the urgent mobilisation of all available containment equipment to remove the toxic slick and reduce the threat it poses to marine life.

Two bodies recovered on Saturday morning were found on the lifeboat deck of the Panama-registered boat, state CCTV reported, in a rescue attempt that also saw the rescue team manage to retrieve the ship's data and video recordings.

Zhao, who is deputy head of the ministry's press office, said new photos and video footage showed the fire had gone out entirely and said an investigation into the disaster would be conducted according to the "strictest global standards".

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said at a daily press briefing that China mobilized nine vessels on the day the accident happened and there had been more than 13 rescue vessels at the scene from the second day.

After more than a week burning in the East China Sea, an oil tanker that collided with a freighter has sunk.

In a message to Zarif, Wang expressed deep condolences over the deaths of the Iranian sailors aboard the tanker Sanchi as well as his sympathy toward their families. Some needed to be taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals as they were so overwhelmed by the news.

"There is no hope of finding survivors among the members of the crew", Mohammad Rastad, spokesman for the Iranian rescue team sent to Shanghai, told Iran's state broadcaster. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani formed a special committee to investigate the cause of the incident last week.

The Panamanian-flagged, 85,462-ton tanker has operated under five different names since it was built in 2008, according to the United Nations -run International Maritime Organization and the industry website Maritime Traffic.

The size of the from the ship and the extent of the environmental harm were not known, but the disaster has the potential to be the worst since 1991 when 260,000 tonnes of oil leaked off the Angolan coast.
