Man Living in MI for 30 Years Deported

This Family's Heartbreaking Story Reveals the True Human Consequences of Trump's DACA Fight

A petition launched on MoveOn.org, titled "Help Jorge Garcia return to his family in Lincoln Park!" now sits at more than 3,000 signatures.

Monday morning, the Garcia family had a family friend drive them to the airport, where they were told Jorge would be deported. Since then, they have met with immigration officials annually, and each time his deportation was delayed. He missed the age requirement by one year that may have temporarily protected him under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

According to The Washington Post, Garcia, who worked as a landscaper, came to the United States with an undocumented family member.

Jorge Garcia's wife, Cindy Garcia, said that her husband has been in contact with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the last 13 years.

Jorge Garcia had been facing an order of removal from immigration courts since 2009, but under the previous administration, he had been given stays of removal.

In November, amid U.S. President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigrants, Garcia learned he was to leave the country.

Help could be on the way for people like Garcia in the form of a new DACA that would extent to older immigrants, but because he was already deported he may not qualify even if that bill eventually passes.

Sadly, had the laws been followed in the first place, Garcia would very likely be living in MI with his family and all of this would be behind him by now.

Garcia said ICE agents told them: "We're going to detain him and he's not going home". He appears to have led a quiet life, with no criminal record. "... It's going to be kind of hard for me to adjust, too". He should have done so years ago, and implemented steps to gain U.S. citizenship, even if it included deportation and applying legally.

Everybody may not get everything they want, but it can be improved to allow people like Jorge Garcia to become valuable American citizens.

Now, Joge resides in Mexico City, Fox 8 reports, and his wife is working to get him back to the U.S. Immigrants like Garcia are an asset that stabilize and grow metro Detroit, they said. "It was rough because we knew he was going to leave eventually".

"It's heartbreaking", Bonesatti said.

"He came at age 10", the Michigan United legal services director said. "He's never even gotten a traffic ticket". "This is the place he knows". "Day?" Erik Shelley, a leader with Michigan United, an immigrant rights group, told the Free Press.

Cindy Garcia spoke to Cuomo after footage of her husband's farewell went viral. "You have no choice but to face it head on and accept what is being thrown at you because there is nothing else that you can do".
