Eric Washington to replace Steve Wilks as Panthers DC

Vikings fans didn't have the best experience at the Eagles game

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera promoted Wilks to defensive coordinator following the 2016 season after Sean McDermott departed to become head coach of the Buffalo Bills.

Cardinals offensive tackle D.J. Humphries also expressed support for Wilks, who like him is a native of Charlotte.

Azcentral's Kent Somers is reporting the Cardinals and Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks are "closing in on a deal" to make him the next Cardinals coach.

The Cardinals planned to introduce Wilks as coach at a news conference Tuesday at team headquarters. The 48-year old Wilks will replace Bruce Arians, who retired from coaching at the end of the 2017 season.

During Washington's tenure, the Panthers placed in the top 10 in sacks in five of the past six seasons.

Washington has spent the last seven years as the Panthers defensive line coach and had a very successful run, as no defense has had more sacks than Carolina since the 2012-13 campaign. He then trekked to Ohio State, where he was a member of the coaching staff for three seasons before landing his final collegiate job at Northwestern in 2004. He has 11 years of coaching experience at the college level before he began his time in the National Football League as defensive backs coach for the Bears in 2006. The Cardinals will likely transition to a 4-3 base, which is the same scheme Wilks and Holcomb used in Carolina. But Shurmur is reportedly set to become the next head coach of the New York Giants. Patrick Peterson tweeted this out after the news broke.
