Future of Shopping?: Amazon's First Cashierless Automated Store Open For Biz

Amazon's first grocery store without a checkout line opening to public

The real test for Amazon Go will be how it stands up to real, everyday use. Yes, you heard that right the Amazon Go store is the only grocery store where you can enter the store just by scanning the app.

While the store has no checkouts - and therefore no one working on them - there are still employees on site. Amazon Go also carries small selections of beer and wine, as well as produce, meat and even Amazon's own meal kits.

The premise is simply, you scan the Amazon Go mobile app on your way into the store and then technology takes over with weight sensors and cameras tracking which products you pick off the shelf.

When a customer is finished shopping, they can just leave the shop.

Amazon has not said if it will be opening more Go stores, which are separate from the Whole Foods chain that it bought a year ago for $13.7 billion. The answer: "What we always came back to was people don't like waiting in line". Could we push the boundaries of computer vision and machine learning to create a store where customers could simply take what they want and go?

Will Amazon sell or licence Amazon go technology?

In a recent interview inside the store, Kumar, the vice president of technology for Amazon Go as well as the company's 13 Amazon Books stores, would not concede that technology problems caused the long delay.

Food retailing and consumer behaviour expert Gary Mortimer told The New Daily he expects this kind of technology will be available in Australian stores in five to 10 years. Inside, you'll find a wide variety of on-the-go foods such as salads, beverages, and ready-to-eat meals for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

The experiment will succeed only if the Amazon store offers good food at good prices, said Jeff Lenard, spokesman for the National Assn. of Convenience Stores.

That doesn't mean Amazon is without a strong bricks and mortar presence, though.

Amazon Go opens to public later today in Seattle. Amazon also now has no plans to import this technology to Whole Foods locations or sell it to other retailers, according to The New York Times.

Amazon has officially opened its first cashless supermarket, Amazon Go, where tills have been replaced with turnstiles that scan people's phones to charge for grocery items.

Shortly thereafter, your Amazon Prime account will be billed for the items you purchased, completing the transaction.
