Sixteen people were injured after a train hit a buffer at a terminus station northwest of Sydney in Australia's New South Wales state on Monday morning, ambulance and transport authorities said.

No one was trapped inside the train, the NSW Police said, although there were earlier reports that claim three passengers were "trapped" and were later freed.

Fire and Rescue NSW said at least three people were trapped and SES crews were also on the scene.

The train was travelling to Richmond Railway Station when it crashed into a buffer at the end of the line.

People were photographed taking boxes of pizza into the talks on Monday night with 9,000 Sydney Trains staff potentially set to go on a full-scale strike on January 29 if a deal is not reached.

Pictures from the scene showed the train was still upright on the tracks and carriages did not appear crumpled.

A 21-year-old man suffered a suspected fractured leg. The injured were treated at the scene and transported to nearby hospitals.

One passenger was believed to suffer spinal injuries.

Officials said it is too soon to determine the cause of the crash. "We will provide more information as it becomes available", it tweeted.

Another day of negotiations has ended without result as NSW rail workers and Sydney Trains bosses continue to discuss pay and working conditions one week before a planned strike.

A number of injured passengers and two employees, including the driver, have been treated.
