London's Charing Cross station has been closed due to a "large" gas leak in a nearby area, rail operators and the fire brigade said, prompting the police to evacuate hundreds of people from a hotel and a nightclub.

The fire service said high levels of natural gas had been found in the atmosphere and a 100m cordon has been put in place.

Train services are now not running into Charing Cross and Waterloo East - which is also closed - and are being diverted to other terminals.

According to reports, 1,450 people have been evacuated.

"Commuters are advised to find alternative route and The Strand is closed".

"Gas engineers are working on isolating the leak and we'd asked people to avoid the area if possible".

The Metropolitan Police said officers and the London Fire Brigade were working with the National Grid and other agencies at the scene.

"Gas leak fixed, safety checks carried out and roads fully open".

The leak is also expected to cause travel chaos from the surrounding stations and Southeastern Railway have already announced they would be unable to run trains from Charing Cross station. "It's hard to say how long the cordons will stay up - we're waiting for the gas authority to locate the leak", he added. "Security being knocked aside".

Another said: "Lots of people trying to leave at the same time".

Revellers at the Heaven nightclub described trying to leave "as fast as possible".

Commuters lamented the journey into work, with one tweeting: "What is going on this morning?" "I've just had a text from work but why didn't we hear earlier?" "The whole area smelt of gas, and we called the site engineers who came to investigate".
