Apple releases macOS Excessive Sierra 10.13.three and iOS 11.2.5

In security update, Apple backports Meltdown fix to older macOS versions

Yesterday, Apple's security team released supplemental security updates for older macOS versions -macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and OS X El Capitan 10.11.6.

While Apple's security team is mum on such issues, many experts now expect the company to backport the Spectre flaw to older macOS versions in a future update as well, and maybe backport the patches for older iOS versions too.

Apple has released security patches for iOS and macOS that include, among other things, Meltdown and Spectre fixes.

The company had previously issued a patch for macOS High Sierra, the most recent version of its Mac operating system, but it put out a new update for High Sierra also. According to the update's release notes, it "Addresses an issue that could cause Messages conversations to temporarily be listed out of order" and "Resolves an issue that could cause your Mac to stop responding when connected to an SMB server". The memory corruption bug allows remote code execution attacks simply by processing a maliciously crafted audio file.

Updating your Mac device to the latest macOS, OS X version is simple. Apple patched its latest Mac operating system, macOS High Sierra, earlier in January.

If you're running a version of Apple's desktop operating system prior to El Capitan, of course, you're out of luck here.

Once downloaded, an information window will pop up on your screen.

Along with macOS High Sierra 10.13.3, Apple has now released two further security updates. If you have multiple Mac computers, we strongly recommend installing on a secondary system.

Security Update 2018-001, as the patch is called, mitigates the dangers of Meltdown and Spectre.
