Shooting At Kentucky High School Leaves 2 Dead, At Least 17 Injured

A gunman has opened fire at a school in Benton Kentucky

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin said the shooter was also a 15-year-old male student, during a joint news conference with the Kentucky State Police.

Sanders said that the girl died on the scene, while the boy died in a hospital.

The deceased students are 15-year-old Bailey Nicole Holt and 15-year-old Preston Ryan Cope.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center spokeswoman Tavia Smith says two patients from the shooting were being taken to a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Oscar Guillamondegui, M.D., MPH, Medical Director of Trauma ICU in Vanderbilt said: "This is the first time this institution has had to deal with a mass casualty from a school shooting, and I don't think it's someone anyone can be prepared for fully", WKRN.Com reported.

Five others were treated for injuries, but they were not shot, Bevin and police said. A 15-year-old boy was taken into custody and will be charged with two counts of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder, Sanders confirmed. The suspect, a 15 year old male student, was taken into custody on site in a non-violent apprehension by the Marshall County Sheriff Department.

On Tuesday, gunfire erupted inside Marshall County High School in at around 8 a.m.

Several nearby churches and schools were holding vigils for the victims. "I can not believe this is happening, '" she said.

The school immediately went into lockdown, but some students had already fled the grounds. It was insane. Well, of course, we extend our condolences to the families, those who lost their live, those who are injured and know some are in critical condition and, as you said, it is a small community, tight knit.

He said chaos broke out in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

Mitchell Garland says he rushed outside of his business near Marshall County High School when he heard about the shooting Tuesday morning. On Wednesday he was charged with two counts of murder and 12 counts of first degree assault, Marshall County Assistant Attorney Jason Darnall told reporters.

"We have to wait to receive entire police file and the psychological examination before we determine how we want to proceed", she said.

The Kentucky attack was the 11th school shooting of 2018. She added: "I honestly don't care what this boy was going through, he could have talked to someone".

"A tragedy beyond words occurred in our community today", school Superintendent Trent Lovett said in a statement late Tuesday. Seventeen others were reportedly injured in the shooting but were not shot, reports the New York Times. "We will never accept these horrific acts of violence as routine".
