A tale of two Texas senators on DACA

US government shuts down as Trump feuds with Democrats

While the Senate easily approved the bill earlier in the day, most House Democrats voted against the continuing resolution. The Democratic leadership agreed to back the bill after accepting promises from Republicans for a debate later on the future of young illegal immigrants.

McConnell said over the weekend that he intends to move to vote on an immigration bill if both parties can't agree to one by February 8, as long as the government is still fully open.

The White House and GOP leaders said they would not negotiate with Democrats on immigration until the government was reopened, and White House officials boasted that Trump didn't reach out to any Democratic lawmakers during the shutdown.

The impasse exposed the Democrats' limits on how far they were willing to go with the fight, at the risk of looking beholden to one part of their base - activists pushing to allow the so-called dreamers to stay in the US legally.

President Trump, a Republican, said in a statement: "I am pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses".

Including funding for a border wall in immigration reform talks could push away liberal Democrats from supporting the long term funding, but attract conservative Republicans from getting behind a deal.

Democrats want protections from deportation for so-called Dreamers, more than 700,000 young immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. After passing through the House on Thursday, the proposed short-term spending bill moved to the Senate to be voted on before the previous budget expired.

Trump has said he wants a deal in place to legalize the country's 700,000 Dreamers. They mostly grew up in the United States.

The legislation now heads to the president's desk.

During a meeting at the White House on Friday, hours before the government shut down, Schumer offered Trump partial funding for his long-promised wall along the US-Mexico border in exchange for protections for the almost 700,000 unauthorized immigrants shielded from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, set to expire on March 5. Many in Trump's White House are former contributors to Schumer's Senate campaigns, including Trump ($9,000), Trump's children Eric, Donald Jr., and Ivanka ($6,800 between them), and Jared Kushner ($4,000).

Tens of thousands of federal workers had begun closing down operations for lack of funding on Monday, the first weekday since the shutdown, but essential services such as security and defense operations had continued. But when it comes to enforcing a more belligerent anti-Russian foreign policy, the party, backed by the military, the intelligence agencies and the most powerful corporations, roars like a mighty beast. It forced him to cancel a weekend trip to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Washington has been hampered by frequent threats of a shutdown in recent years as the two parties fight over spending, immigration and other issues.

Mr. Schumer and Mr. Trump blamed each other for the shutdown, echoing a blame game that rose up between the Republicans and Democrats.

While McConnell and then-Democratic leader Harry Reid were stuck in a stalemate, she forged a bipartisan path forward then. Speaker Paul Ryan has promised Republican lawmakers that they won't be bound by any arrangement reached in the Senate on immigration, House Freedom Caucus Chair Mark Meadows and Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia said on Sunday.

Trump's budget director Mick Mulvaney, however, indicated the White House might be looking for a bigger deal.

'Why do we have to wait?'

Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana voted no on the procedural motion to re-open the government - the only no vote among 10 incumbent Democrats facing re-election this year in states won by Trump in 2016.

"This shutdown is going to get a lot worse tomorrow", McConnell said in a speech on the Senate floor.

U.S. stocks advanced on Monday as each of Wall Street's main indexes touched a record intraday level after the shutdown deal. Kirsten Gillibrand of NY and Sen.
