Caught On Camera: Arizona Police Chase Ends In Violent Crash

Chase crash

A high speed police chase in Arizona ended in a head-on collision that sent the escapee's truck flying.

The chase started around 10 a.m. west of Phoenix when a trooper tried to stop the SUV that Taebel was driving.

While troopers considered using stop sticks at several points during the chase, they determined the amount of traffic on the freeway made it unsafe to do so.

The driver then got off the freeway and drove south.

The vehicle spins out of control in a huge cloud of smoke as auto parts litter the road.

After weaving through traffic at high speed, Taebel eventually met his match: an vehicle heading in the opposite direction, which he rammed into head on, sending his SUV flipping through the air. "But the suspect veered to the right and rammed one of our patrol cars and then continued southbound at a high rate of speed", said Lee.

"He continued into the intersection where it struck a black SUV, nearly head-on, causing a major collision", said Lee.

Some witnesses in the area even interacted briefly with the suspect as troopers began to surround him.

Taebel suffered minor injuries and was treated and released into custody.

According to an accompanying court document submitted by DPS, Taebel said he was "wrongfully detained", wouldn't "obey any rules or laws imposed on his freedom", and "had the legal authority to take" the lives of officers trying to arrest him.

A 47-year-old woman was hurt in the crash.
