Australian men and women through to Day 3's finals at Sydney Sevens

The final quarter-final spot was decided when US won its second match by beating Canada in the last match of the day.

As for the men, they had only the one match yesterday, eventually edging out the United States of America by a margin of seven points, the final score being 26-19.

Lucas was playing his first match of the tournament, replacing the injured Boyd Killingworth after Killingworth suffered a hamstring injury.

The men's tournament also began Friday with the first round of matches in pool play.

"We're three from three, we must be happy with that, we are happy with that but we're going to have to tidy up a few areas for tomorrow".

Cherry helped put the Aussies on the front foot with a second-minute try.

The match was played nearly exclusively in the Spanish half, aside from a late raid on the Australian line to close the first half, with Australia still yet to concede a point in four games.

Dan Norton's superb try from deep ensured England scored three times in the half-time, before Richard de Carpentier and a second from Mitchell set up a group decider against South Africa.

They weren't able to hold out a Scotland score for long, with Jamie Farndale sprinting away in the fifth minute to narrow the margin back to five.

There was disappointment at the start of day two as Alex Davis was ruled out with an ankle injury sustained against Spain, a game where he scored two tries, with Ryan Olowofela coming into the squad to make his World Series debut.

Aussie skipper Lewis Holland said the message was simple in the final moments, with a man down. "We just went home (after Dubai) and really focused on the points where they really broke us down".

New Zealand and Australia have been the two dominant sides in Sydney, tallying 174-19 and 182-0 scorelines respectively across their five games so far.

The Aussies will be sweating on the fitness of livewire Maurice Longbottom, who rolled his ankle after Australia's pool game against Canada, with Friend unsure whether he will be fully fit to play on Sunday.

The Challenge Trophy quarter-finals will be Samoa v Canada, Papua New Guinea v Wales, Scotland v Russian Federation and France v Spain.

Keep up with all the day two action here.
