Vienna Hosts New Inter-Syria Talks Under UN Auspices

Syria peace talks resume

It leaked on Friday as the latest round of United Nations -led talks was underway in Vienna, and its authenticity was confirmed to Reuters by three diplomatic sources.

Vienna, Jan 27 Syria's opposition said today that it will boycott a peace congress in Russian Federation next week, according to its official Twitter account.

He said it was "vital to end all violence and restore full respect for Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity and independence and for the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people through a Syrian-led and owned process facilitated by the United Nations".

Syria's main opposition group, the Syrian Negotiations Commission, this week said it would need further details before it could make a final decision on whether to attend the talks, which dozens of rebel factions have already rejected.

Speaking to reporters in Vienna early Saturday morning on 27 January, de Mistura assessed that it is understood that any Constitutional Committee would at the very least comprise Government, Opposition representatives in the intra-Syrian talks, Syrian experts, civil society, independents, tribal leaders and women.

Lavrov said the Sochi conference could push foward the political settlement in Syria.

Opposition spokesman at the United Nations talks in Vienna, Yahya al-Aridi said the Sochi talks were an attempt to undermine the United Nations efforts to broker a peace deal: "This whole round in Vienna was supposed to be a crucial one, a test for commitment".

It comes at a time when there is little sign of any political breakthrough and a few days before Russian Federation, a key backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, convenes a Syrian congress in Sochi.

"They want to present themselves as peace brokers, not only in Syria but in the Middle East in general, a role traditionally carried out by the Americans", Haid told AFP.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Wednesday called the Vienna talks the "last hope" for reaching a political solution, raising worries over a "considerable worsening of the humanitarian situation" in Afrin, Idlib and Eastern Ghouta. "How can countries like Britain and France, which follow the American policy., be the makers of any political solution... in Syria?"

"All of them have participated in the bloodshed of the Syrian people", he said of the five nations, blasting the USA as the country "that created ISIS" and adding that Saudi Arabia was anything but a "beacon of freedom in the east".
