Jury finds Gasser guilty of manslaughter in McKnight killing

Ronald Gasser left was found guilty of manslaughter Friday in the death of ex-NFL player Joe McKnight right

It's insane to think that it's been over a year since Joe McKnight was shot and killed at age 28 during an "apparent road rage" incident in Terrytown, LA.

Gasser, who did not take the witness stand in his own defense, told investigators that he shot McKnight from the driver's seat of his vehicle as the former National Football League player stood at Gasser's open passenger-side window on December 1, 2016.

"They were both all over the place", motorist Jerrod Jones said, when prosecutors asked about the positions of Gasser and McKnight's vehicles on the road, per Bacon-Blood. Gasser faces up to 40 years in prison. During the second degree murder trial, Gasser claimed he shot McKnight in self-defense after the latter appeared agitated as he clambered out of his auto to confront Gasser. Defense attorney Goetz said he planned to file for an appeal, reports said.

Gasser shot McKnight after what prosecutors said was a road rage incident that included aggressive driving along a five mile route.

During the trial, Gasser alleged that he shot McKnight when he lunged at him. Gasser's defense team claimed McKnight aggressively pursued Gasser, but witness testimony disputed such a claim.

McKnight was considered the no 1 running back in the country in 2006 when he graduated from John Curtis Christian School in Louisiana. He cited the lack of gun powder on McKnight's body as evidence that McKnight wasn't close to Gasser.

McKnight went on to play at the University of Southern California before being drafted in 2010 by NY, where he played until 2012.

A top recruit in the class of 2007, McKnight rushed 347 times for 2,213 yards and 13 touchdowns, and caught 66 passes for 542 yards and 2 touchdowns in 3 seasons at USC.

The case triggered protests after police initially released Gasser - who didn't flee from the shooting scene - after more than eight hours of questioning, and led some to question whether race had played a role in his release.
