Marcus Smart apologizes to Celtics for cutting hand

Jan 18 2018 Boston MA USA Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum drives to the basket

He has not played since December 9th, and has played in only two games since November 5th.

The Celtics scratched out a 92-88 home win over the Warriors in November, putting them in position to sweep the two-game season series on Saturday.

He hasn't been as consistent as he was during the beginning of the season, but he is only 19 and has not been used to the Celtics' tough schedule.

Under the coaching of Brad Stevens, the Celtics have been forced to adapt to a brutal schedule this season. They held Boston to a field goal percentage of 32.9%, but it was ultimately not good enough to pull out the victory with their offensive struggles. Boston's guards limited Golden State's dynamic backcourt duo of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson to a total of 22 points on 8-for-32 shooting in that game. A player whose game is contingent on creating handle and meandering through with his handle and agility needs a good knee with which to do it.

"I would say that the two times that you referred to are the times that have popped up in addition to this", said Stevens when asked his level of concern for Smart, who also ran into the stands to confront a fan while playing at Oklahoma State.

This contest could turn into a joke if the Celtics don't receive a boost from players who will receive more of an opportunity with Smart sidelined.

His injury will delegate more minutes to young Terry Rozier as Kyrie Irving's backup during Smart's absence. Stevens took him out to be safe, but said he was "feeling OK".

The Celtics big man was selected to the reserves in a vote by coaches and will join teammate Kyrie Irving, who was chosen as a starter, in the annual showcase at Staples Center on February 18. Meanwhile, the Warriors are 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight games against a team with a winning record, 1-4-1 ATS in their last six home games and 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight games following a win of more than 10 points.

The Celtics would love for one of those bodies to be Smart, but that's not going to happen.

He's expected to miss about two weeks with lacerations to his right hand.
