Polish rescue team finds French climber on Pakistan's 'Killer Mountain'

Stranded mountain climbers on Nanga Parbat to be rescued

Some onlookers are also urging Google to lift Global Positioning System tracking restrictions on Adam Bielecki, the lead Polish rescue climber.

"It's a awful and painful decision", he added.

Tomasz Mackiewicz of Poland and Elisabeth Revol of France were trying to climb the 8,126-metre-tall Himalayan peak located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan and known as the "killer mountain" among the mountaineer community.

"The military has two helicopters ready who will move four Polish mountaineers who are already on a summit on K-2 to Nanga Parbat for the rescue mission", he said.

The team of Polish climbers with support from the Pakistani military launched the attempt Saturday afternoon to rescue stranded French mountaineer Elisabeth Revol, but were unable to reach Polish national Tomek (Tomasz) Mackiewicz on Nanga Parbat. Any extra money raised will now go to Mackiewicz's family.

Thus, a dramatic rescue operation was launched, which drew four volunteers from the nearby Polish K2 Winter Expedition, who halted their progress this week to help save the pair. She was later shifted to Islamabad.

The elite mountaineers Adam Bielicki and Denis Urubko began their ascent on Saturday evening, trying to reach Revol while the winter weather remained clear enough to allow them to climb.

Mackiewicz, who was said to be suffering from snow blindness and frostbite, has still not been found and is feared to have died on the mountain, as conditions are said to be treacherous, and no rescuers were able to scale or fly the rescue helicopter any higher up the peak, forcing them to make the heartbreaking decision to leave Mackiewicz behind.

A crowdfunding campaign raised almost $140,000 to finance the rescue and support the wife and three children of Mackiewicz.

In 2013, extremists shot dead 10 foreign climbers and their Pakistani guide at the Nanga Parbat base camp.

Pakistan rivals Nepal for the number of peaks over 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) and is considered climbers' paradise, but fatalities are also common.

It was only summited during wintertime for the first time ever in February 2016.

On June 27 a year ago, two mountaineers, Alberto Zerain, a Spanish alpinist, and Mariano Galvan, an Argentinian national, went missing while trying to climb the same peak, according to local reports.
