SpaceX Targets Feb. 6 Maiden Falcon Heavy Launch

Falcon Heavy | SpaceX

Set to be the nightcap of relatively slow January for SpaceX, the rocket company is nearing the end of preparations for the launch of a communications satellite co-owned by SES and the government of Luxembourg, known as GovSat-1/SES-16.

Since announcing Falcon Heavy, which is out-performed only by NASA's retired Saturn V rocket, Musk has characterized the maiden flight as "high-risk" due to the "aerial ballet" of coordination required to get it off the ground and land all three boosters.

America's SpaceX company has conducted a key test ahead of the maiden flight of its new rocket - the Falcon Heavy.

The demonstration flight of Falcon Heavy will carry a dummy payload, although a simple weight is too boring for Musk.

The Falcon Heavy is essentially three smaller Falcon 9 rockets fastened together.

Instead, Mr Musk has made a decision to put his old sportscar on the top of the Falcon Heavy. It has also been in development for quite some time now. "I love the thought of a auto drifting apparently endlessly through space and perhaps being discovered by an alien race millions of years in the future", Musk explained in a tweet last month.

Musk describes the vehicle as being his own, but considering that he essentially owns all unsold Roadsters, and won't exactly be driving this one any time soon, this claim to personal ownership feels symbolic at best. Everybody is ready for the Falcon Heavy launch.

According to experts, 92% of the thrust would be enough for the first launch. A minimum of six more reused Falcon 9s are then expected to fly between May and the end of 2018, and this nearly certainly does not account for the imminent introduction of Block 5.

However, two days later Musk confirmed the February 6 launch date, while Chris Gerbhardt, assistant managing editor, journalist, and writer for @NASASpaceflight, said the 7th would be a back-up day. SpaceX Rendering: The two side boosters separating from the center core of Falcon Heavy.

The Falcon Heavy has been in the works for several years now and has seen more than a few delays. It is likely that the main objective of Falcon Heavy's extended static fire was to ensure that SpaceX had developed a safe and functional method of igniting all 27 engines without damaging itself, a real risk from the torque of each engine's turbopump operating in the same orientation.

The inaugural flight will blast off from Apollo launchpad 39A at the John F Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Meritt Island, Florida.

The launch can be watched live.

A SpaceX rocket explosion has destroyed a launch pad before. The launch of the Falcon Heavy will herald a momentous time in the history of the space company, and it's something that we are looking forward to.
