Vaping too causes cancer, says study

Vaping Damages DNA and Increases Lung Cancer Risk In Mice

E-cigarette users are possibly putting themselves at risk for developing heart disease, lung and bladder cancers, according to a new report.

Researchers subjected cultured human bladder and lung cells to e-cigarette vapor which is created to avoid the carcinogenic byproducts of tobacco.

The study, conducted by researchers from the New York University School of Medicine, exposed mice to e-cigarette smoke (ECS) for 12 weeks at a dose and duration equivalent to light e-cigarette smoking for 10 years in humans. There are still some questions about long-term safety, as e-cigarettes haven't been around that long. "The results may take years to come in because cancer is such a slow process", he told The Guardian.

Because of this and other factors, some researchers have dismissed the findings.

The research found that vaping does include fewer cancer causing chemicals than normal smoking but vapers could be at greater risk of lung and bladder cancers and heart diseases.

"No comparison with conventional cigarettes was made, but in the text of the article, the authors acknowledge the key bit of information that is of crucial relevance in this story: Vapers show a reduction in these chemicals of 97 percent compared to smokers".

For people who use vaping to wean themselves off smoking, that uncertainty might be a perfectly fine thing to live with - a smaller cancer risk is still better than nothing. Nicotine with e-cigarette solvent caused the same damage as nicotine alone, said lead researcher Moon-shong Tang, a professor of environmental medicine.

That is similar to the level in those on nicotine-replacement therapy. This amounted to what Hajek called "extremely large doses of nicotine". It also retarded DNA fix functions and proteins in the lungs. A study in mice, published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is sure to provide fodder for both sides.

Last week a major U.S. report into the health effects of e-cigarettes found that vaping might be useful to help people quit smoking.

Previous studies are split on how harmful e-cigarettes are for teens and adults.

Some experts not involved in the study aren't so enthusiastic about the findings.

Ash Scotland chief executive Sheila Duffy added: "The tobacco industry uses every trick in the book to snare new young people into becoming smokers, with the result that 36 children start smoking every day in Scotland".

While tobacco smoke contains a host of potentially risky chemicals, e-cig liquid consists only of nicotine and relatively harmless solvents.
