Buhari Rallies African Leaders to Create Single, Unified Market

President Uhuru Kenyatta chairs the 27th Session of the Heads of State and Government in the African Peer Review Mechanism at the AU Summit Addis Ababa Ethiopia

Chinese ambassador to the African Union, Kuang Weilin told the media in Addis Ababa on Monday that "it is very hard to understand the claims" and it was entirely untrue.

African leaders at the African Union summit in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) on Monday continued their deliberations with the focus on corruption and conflicts in some AU member states, the presidency said on Monday. The summit, which opened on Sunday in the Ethiopian capital, has brought together leaders from other countries and worldwide organisations.

The African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui, has said chaos in Libya is allowing criminal and terrorist networks to thrive, a news report said on Monday.

Weilin said the story was "preposterous".

When the espionage was uncovered a year ago, the building's IT system including servers was changed, according to Le Monde. "Africans are happy with it. Others are not".

African Union Commission chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat warned against the "rise of national egoism", which some took as a veiled reference to US President Donald Trump.

"I want to underscore that the United States deeply respects the people of Africa, and my commitment to strong and respectful relationships with African nations as sovereign nations is firm", Trump wrote in the letter sent last week to African leaders.

"I don't think spying is the speciality of the Chinese".

He highlighted the importance of combating illegal transformation of capitals outside Africa, calling for activating African economic and financial institutions since this would reinforce monetary and financial sovereignty in the continent.

"We need a sustained, cooperative and coordinated approach in tackling this menace", he said while outlining UN-AU combined efforts to fight terrorism.

"It is rooted in solutions that are Africa-owned, Africa-driven and Africa-led", he said.

"I am very pleased that during my term, Morocco was able to join the AU unanimously", added the Guinean president, underlining that "Morocco returns to its African institutional family to unite and federate the energies of Africans".

His only concern, he said, was that the AU, instead of China, should have built the headquarters.
