Yemen: UAE-Allied Separatists Seize Last Government Stronghold Aden

The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council has declared victory over the UN-backed government of Yemeni President Abd rabbuh Mansur Hadi in the southern city of Aden today.

However, a senior government official told The Associated Press that Prime Minister Ahmed Obaid Bin Daghar and several ministers remain inside and that the separatists have not seized the palace itself.

Residents said forces loyal to the Southern Transitional Council have seized the last stronghold of Hadi's Presidential Protection Forces in Northern Aden.

The running battles have opened a new chapter of upheaval in Yemen, after nearly three years of war between a Saudi-led military coalition and.

Yesterday, sporadic clashes continued after fighting overnight in the port city, especially in its north where separatist forces tried to take control of a military camp, security sources said.

Global charity Save the Children said it was suspending life-saving work in Aden as its staff were forced to hunker down amid gun battles that the Red Cross says have killed at least 36 people in the past three days.

Sunday's fighting broke out after the expiry of a deadline set last week by separatists from the STC for Hadi to dismiss the Bin Daghr government, accusing it of corruption and mismanagement.

Yemen s president has urged Saudi Arabia and its allies to intervene to defend the government. Saudi-led coalition forces also said they intercepted a Houthi missile fired from Yemen, in Najran province, on January 20.

"The Transitional Council now controls the whole city of Aden practically, with the exception of the palace of Al-Maashiq [the presidential palace], which is the 'red line, '" the source said.

"When the coalition launched its war in 2015 they said it was aimed at preserving a united Yemen, this is no longer the case".

Southern separatists took control of most of the city of Aden, Yemen, on Tuesday after a United Arab Emirates fighter jet bombed the area.

Al Jazeera described the separatist group efforts as a "coup".

It has also exposed deep divisions within the alliance between Hadi's government and the Saudi-led coalition.
