Arab FMs in Cairo strategize on Jerusalem

In Amman, Jordan, the head of the Arab League warned Thursday that the Trump administration's decision to withhold tens of millions of dollars in aid to Palestinian refugees threatens the stability of the entire Middle East.

The Arab League Council decided, during its meeting on the foreign ministers level, to reach out to the world's main players to set up an global multilateral mechanism for sponsoring the Middle East peace process under auspices of the United Nations.

Referring to United Nations state members vote on the decision, he said only 9 states out of 193 voted against motion, mirroring a resounding rejection of the U.S decision.

The move comes amid escalating tensions between the Palestinians and the United States since President Donald Trump's Jerusalem declaration.

They also called on all States to refrain from establishing diplomatic missions in the city.

They affirmed the right of the Palestinian people to exercise all forms of struggle against the occupation, in accordance with the provisions of worldwide law.

The meeting is set to focus on the continuing tensions over the United States recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas delivers a speech at a press conference after the extraordinary summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, Turkey, on December 13, 2017.

They highlighted the need of empowering the Palestinian government national concord to shoulder its responsibilities towards Gaza Strip and prepare for the planned general elections in the framework of a national inclusive partnership.

"Foreign ministers of the Arab states have chose to cooperate with prominent global counterparts to create a new multilateral worldwide mechanism under United Nations auspices for delivering a peace process", the final statement of the Arab League's ministerial meeting read. He also canceled a meeting last month with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who had traveled to the region.

The Arab peace initiative committee comprises Egypt, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Iraq, Palestine, Qatar, Lebanon, Morocco and Yemen, along with the Arab League secretary general.

Trump's decision also to relocate the USA embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv triggered deadly clashes in Palestinian territories and was rejected in a non-binding UN General Assembly resolution.

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets to denounce the American announcement on Jerusalem in different cities across the world.
