US Missile Intercept Test Failed: What Went Wrong?

A missile being launched over Korea

A missile launched from land failed to intercept an incoming target launched from an aircraft over Hawaii, according to several administration officials.

The worrying fail comes amid heightened concerns about North Korea's developing missile and nuclear weapons which could strike American Pacific islands as well as the United States mainland.

"The primary objective of the test was to intercept an air-launched intermediate-range ballistic missile target", the statement said.

While the missile is still in development, it represents a key advancement in USA defense capabilities as it is created to eventually intercept the type of intercontinental range missile that North Korea has vowed to launch against the US.

"We have heard (the missile) failed".

Palestinian president coming to United Nations to answer Trump
The meeting is set to focus on the continuing tensions over the United States recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel . They also called on all States to refrain from establishing diplomatic missions in the city.

It was unclear why the test failed and an analysis was underway, the official said.

The SM-3 Block IIB is developed jointly by the United States and Japan. It was, however, some routine for the missile defense system that defense experts say that it now lacks the requisite capacity to provide a defensive shield on the west coast of the United States against attacks from North Korea or any other enemy. If confirmed, the test would be the second unsuccessful trial for the Raytheon-made missile in the past year.

Of course, with rumors of a North Korean military parade meant to highlight their growing suite of Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missiles expected to occur before the start of the Olympic Games in South Korea later this month, it's possible the US would simply prefer to keep these failures close to the chest.

Tokyo now plans to upgrade its missiles and introduce the Aegis Ashore systems to beef up its defense capability and ease the burden on Maritime Self-Defense Forces personnel on Aegis destroyers.

In his first State of the Union speech to Congress, Trump's tough rhetoric underscored persistent tensions despite recent talks between North and South Korea that led to Pyongyang's agreement to participate in next month's Winter Olympic Games in the South.
