WADA recommends use of older doping test kits at Pyeongchang Olympics

The CAS said it was upholding the appeals from 28 out of the 39 Russian athletes given lifetime bans by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for doping violations at the Sochi Games.

On Saturday, the International Olympic Committee said that 13 of the 28 athletes cleared by CAS would be considered by a special International Olympic Committee panel for a possible invitation to take part in Pyeongchang.

Bach is hopeful that a final decision on whether or not to invite the Russian athletes affected by the CAS ruling will be made before the Winter Olympics get underway on Friday.

Already 169 Russians have been cleared to compete as "clean" athletes despite a blanket ban on Russia from taking part in the Winter Olympics following revelations of state-sponsored doping.

There are 115 members on the IOC, and candidates may be an individual member, an active athlete, a representative of an worldwide sports federation or a representative from a national Olympic body.

In addition to overturning the bans, the Court of Arbitration for Sport reinstated seven medals that had been stripped from Russian Federation dating back to the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

"We have some concerns about the quality of this [CAS] decision", he said.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko says the country plans to file more legal action to ensure athletes who won their doping appeals can compete at the Pyeongchang Olympics. Excluding the 28 athletes, 11 more were found of the systematic manipulation and CAS stated that there was a doping problem at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

"We will take an individual view of each of these athletes before reaching a decision", he told a press conference, adding that the process would be finished before the start of the Games.

The IOC notes that CAS said the urgent ruling "does not mean that these 28 athletes are declared innocent".

On Saturday, Head of IOC's Communications Department Mark Adams announced the commission led by Valerie Fourneyron would consider inviting another 13 Russian athletes.

Additional athletes cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). CNN's Masters & McKirdy reported among the reinstated athletes were cross-country skiing Gold Medalist Alexander Legkov, men's skeleton Gold Medalist Alexander Tretiakov and women's skeleton world champion Elena Nikitina.

"You can only look into an appeal seriously when you have the reasoned decision, which we do not have", he said.

"Of course, one can speculate about the need to reform CAS, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, especially after the International Olympic Committee had not been satisfied with its decisions".
