2018 iPhones to only run Intel inside

Apple's iPhone X as seen in its official site

This if true will mark an end of the road for Qualcomm chips on iPhone both of which has had an nearly unshakeable relationship for quite some time now. Kuo said that Apple would launch three iPhones in 2018, two would be new flagships models running OLED displays, essentially successors to the iPhone 8 series (both an iPhone model and a larger iPhone Plus) but using the bells and whistles the iPhone X introduced, while the third would have an LCD display.

Apple already has started to transition to Intel modems, with some iPhone X handsets shipping with Intel's XMM7480 modems while others ship with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X16 modem.

"We expect Intel to be the exclusive supplier of baseband chip for 2H18 new iPhone models, while Qualcomm may not have a share of the orders at all", said Kuo's note.

Apple is able to make the switch because of the capabilities of Intel's latest XMM 7560 modem, which now supports both GSM and CDMA.

Apple and Qualcomm are hardly the best of friends.

It was earlier reported that the 2018 iPhones would have panels manufactured by LG, but Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed the South Korean technology company might not be able to meet the production standards of Apple.

The previous limitation of Intel modems, which lacked CDMA, prohibited the tech giant from ditching Qualcomm altogether.

It's unknown how long Apple's agreement with Intel would last, as the iPhone manufacturer might use its position as a bargaining chip in its string of legal battles.

The iPhone Xs is expected to sport a 5.8-inch OLED screen and the iPhone Xs Plus a 6.5-inch OLED display. However, Kuo told investors that Qualcomm might return as a supplier to Apple, most likely as concessions in their lawsuit settlement. There are multiple reasons that Apple might decide to go with Intel as its sole supplier.

Apple is famous for not trying to rely too much on individual suppliers as it gives too much leverage, and the company constantly tries to push for a more diversified supply chain, where it can. This could also happen as Intel might not be ready for the 5G wave on time.

The Apple and Qualcomm feud continues.
