China, Iran, Russia Lash Out At US Nuclear Policy Plan

US 'shamelessly threatening Russia with atomic weapon', says Iran's Rouhani

The US report, titled the National Posture Review (NPR), was released on Friday and claims that developing smaller nuclear weapons would bolster its deterrent. Like Obama, Trump would consider using nuclear weapons only in "extreme circumstances", while maintaining a degree of ambiguity about what that means.

Iran accused the USA on Sunday of threatening Russian Federation with new atomic weapons after Washington published a document on Friday outlining plans to expand its nuclear capabilities to deter others. Although Barack Obama began the USA upgrade, President Trump is vastly expanding it, but within the rules of a new nuclear treaty between Russian Federation and America that came into force today. Indeed, most experts on Russian nuclear weapons such a Nikolai Sokov-a former Soviet and Russian arms control negotiator-believe that Russia is reducing its dependence on non-strategic nuclear arms.

The Pentagon-led review of the US nuclear arsenal and the policies that govern it was ordered by Trump a year ago.

Both Iran and Russian Federation have also criticised the report, with Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's foreign minister, saying that it is bringing the world "closer to annihilation".

The minister warned "as in the times of the Cold War, we in Europe are especially endangered" by "a renewed nuclear arms race".

The Pentagon's nuclear review concluded that while arms control can advance American interests, "further progress is hard to envision", in light of what the USA considers Russia's aggression in Ukraine and violations of existing arms deals.

The Trump nuclear doctrine breaks with Obama's in ending his push to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in USA defense policy.

The United States would spend $1.2 trillion over the next 30 years on the nuclear weapons.

The issue has been rediscovered by politicians in the wake of Trump's election. Top-diplomat also said: "Trump's obduracy in killing the JCPOA (Iran's nuclear deal with world powers) stems from risky imprudence".

Trump gave the Iran nuclear deal, negotiated before he took office, a final reprieve last month but warned European allies and Congress they had to work with him to fix "the disastrous flaws" in the pact or face a United States exit.

The ultimatum put pressure on European Union powers - key backers and parties to the 2015 worldwide agreement to curb Iranian nuclear ambition.
