Met office issue weather warning of snow and ice for Wakefield

The wintry conditions are expected to continue into the weekend and there are warnings that Britain could face unusually cold weather for the rest of the month.

The country's official weather forecaster has issued a snow and ice warning for the south east of the United Kingdom that includes Brighton and Hove.

On ground above between 500 and 800 feet, there could be between 3 and 6 cms of snow with some drifting also possible in the strong winds.

In the new weather warning, the Met Office state: "Sleet, snow and hail showers, some heavy, will affect western areas through Tuesday, with icy stretches forming overnight".

"A yellow weather warning is in place for snow which may lead to hazardous conditions on roads and footpaths", said gardai.

Temperatures are predicted to fall to -2C tonight.

"There is also a risk of further more widespread snow across the United Kingdom on Friday".

The Met Office says it could be one of the coldest weeks of the winter so far.

Exacta Weather's James Madden warned heavy and widespread snowfall this week threatens significant disruption.

She said: "It's a cold start for what is going to be a cold day". Rain and sleet are expected along the coasts.

The Met Office has already warned that the United Kingdom faces one of the coldest weeks of the winter with temperatures plummeting to as low as -7C in some areas.

A band of rain, sleet and hill snow will move over Northern Ireland in the morning with temperatures rising up to 5C.

"This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services".

Coral bookmakers are making it odds on for snow in several major cities in the United Kingdom this week.

"Anybody who thought spring might come early is sorely mistaken and our odds suggest we are expecting another deluge of snow across the United Kingdom this week", a spokesperson said.
