Bannon Will Be a No-Present for Home Intel Interview

Rep. Mike Conaway said he expected Bannon to comply with the subpoena and answer questions as part of the committee’s investigation into the Russian election

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon won't appear before the House Intelligence Committee Tuesday, escalating a tense standoff with the panel.

Former White House chief strategist and alt-Right news executive Steve Bannon will not testify before the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, two anonymous sources told Reuters on Monday.

Conway's office said the committee itself - which is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election - had made a decision to delay the interview with Bannon.

Bannon declined to answer the questions in light of executive privilege concerns, a claim of privilege Rep. Adam Schiff, the panel's top Democrat, called "breathtaking". At issue is whether the White House will allow Bannon to answer questions about his time in the Trump administration.

The committee has chose to postpone his interview until next week to allow time for the committe and the White House to agree on the terms of the interview.

A highly anticipated House Intelligence Committee interview with Stephen Bannon has been postponed until next week, the committee said on Tuesday, as negotiations continue over the terms of his appearance.

Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas), a member of the committee, said he expected Bannon to comply with the subpoena and testify before the panel and wasn't aware of any agreement on what he can discuss, the network reported.

CNN's source said that while Bannon isn't planning to comply with the House Intelligence panel's subpoena, he would instead answer all of special counsel Robert Mueller's questions. That meeting took place between members of Trump's campaign team and a Russian lawyer who had promised Donald Trump, Jr. compromising information on 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

One of the people says Bannon plans to tell Mueller "everything" he knows.

The White House and the president's legal team have not responded to requests for comment.

"But again, I expect him to be here, expect him to answer the questions, and [we'll] go from there", Conaway said.
