Josh McDaniels Era Officially Begins in Indy

Josh McDaniels

The Indianapolis Colts officially announced the hiring of Josh McDaniels as head coach, the first step in the franchise's quest to return to relevancy and regain its status as a championship-caliber team. The Colts even interviewed former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, but the Chicago Bears struck a deal early with him-and Nagy reportedly liked the idea of coaching Mitchell Trubisky anyway.

ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio reported Sunday evening that there has been "chatter" that McDaniels may decide to not leave New England for the Colts. McDaniels went 11-17 in Denver, before he was sacked by the Broncos in 2010 after less than two seasons. Congrats to Doug Pederson of the Eagles on beating almost 10 percent of the National Football League head coaches on Sunday.

McDaniels will begin his second stint as a head coach. A strip sack of Brady with around 2 minutes to go in the game decided this Super Bowl causing Brady and Belichick's Super Bowl record to drop to 5-3 as questions will likely arise on whether or not one or both of the pair will walk away from New England.

Whatever the case, McDaniels ultimately made a decision to follow through and take the Colts job. Following a stop in St. Louis as the Rams coordinator in 2011, he returned to New England in 2012.

McDaniels will be formally unveiled by the Colts on Wednesday. He previously served as the Denver Broncos' coach during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

The Colts will hope McDaniels can have similar success with Andrew Luck, who was sidelined with a shoulder injury for the entire 2017 season. In a year where the Colts have no need for the one position-quarterback-that so many other teams are desperate for, it makes too much sense not to happen.

Before the Super Bowl, he was asked about an increased role with the team in 2018 and beyond.

He said, "I'm not going to talk about that tonight".
