Olympic Committee rejects inclusion of Russian athletes

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev

On Wednesday afternoon, the CAS will also be hearing the appeal of 32 other Russian athletes who were not invited by the IOC. The Kremlin argued the CAS decision meant the 15 should be treated as clean. The CAS has now disregarded the evidence and reversed bans for 28 of the doped athletes. Its doping prosecutor (WADA) and the executive that governs sports policy globally (the IOC) have both said an inquiry is needed into the workings of sport's judiciary.

Two groups of Russian athletes seeking late entry for the PyeongChang Olympics had their appeals adjourned on Wednesday, leaving decisions on their participation to the eve of the opening ceremony at the earliest. The additional information included data from the LIMS database, traces of prohibited substances, evidence of steroid profile manipulation and further confidential information provided to the Panel by WADA.

The IOC, which has cleared 169 Russians to compete at PyeongChang, said that "not being sanctioned does not automatically confer the privilege of an invitation".

Medvedev said the "purpose of this decision is very far away from sports", aimed to cause "political harm" to Russian Federation.

The IOC did not name the athletes, but Russian officials have said they include two gold-medal winners from the 2014 Sochi Olympics — cross-country skier Alexander Legkov and skeleton racer Alexander Tretiakov.

"There are parameters, but even if you went above them it's possible that it was natural", he said.

The Russian doping scandal continues to cast a long shadow over worldwide sport as the 2018 Winter Olympics begin in PyeongChang, South Korea, on February 9.

On Sunday, IOC President Thomas Bach called the CAS ruling "extremely disappointing and surprising" and said it showed the Swiss-based CAS needs "reforms". "If we can appeal it, we will appeal it".

"The IOC commission has taken a shameful decision", Medvedev wrote on Facebook, adding, "This decision is unfair, unlawful, and it was immoral and politicized". "AMS helps clinicians do just that - by making data and actionable insights readily available to the treating clinicians", GE Healthcare CTO Dr. Jorg Debatin said in a prepared statement. But when the athletes appealed, the International Olympic Committee capitulated to a process that was harried and disorganized, leaving key evidence out of the record.

"We only know about the reasons from a very few sentences in a press release". Coates says CAS will hear the cases in Pyeongchang. But this would be under strict conditions that, if met, would only allow them to participate under a separate designation of "Olympic Athlete from Russia".

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday rejected a request from the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) for including athletes in the Winter Olympics in South Korea's Pyeongchang.
