Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow dies

John Perry Barlow, Grateful Dead Lyricist and Internet Pioneer, Dies at 70

The obit from Electronic Frontier Foundation reads, "It is no exaggeration to say that major parts of the Internet we all know and love today exist and thrive because of Barlow's vision and leadership".

Since the EFF's founding in 1990, the San Francisco-based nonprofit has backed legislation and lawsuits related to online freedom and security, and advised tech companies and governments regarding policies that affect us all in the internet age.

In 1995, Kapor called Barlow "the uncrowned poet laureate of cyberspace".

Cindy Cohn, director of the EFF, announced Mr Barlow's death saying that he died quietly in his sleep on 7 February. A longtime friend of the Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, Barlow co-authored a number of songs for the band throughout the 70s.

"We are creating a world that all may enter without privilege or prejudice accorded by race, economic power, military force, or station of birth", Barlow wrote. Mr. Barlow had been battling a variety of debilitating illnesses since 2015, according to supporters who organized a benefit concert for him the next year.

Cohn went on to say that "in the days and weeks to come, we will be talking and writing more about what an extraordinary role Barlow played for the Internet and the world".

Born in Wyoming on October 3, 1947, Barlow graduated with a degree in comparative religion from Wesleyan University. The pair were the creative minds behind some of the psychedelic rock group's most well-known songs, including Black Throated Wind, Mexicali Blues and Looks Like Rain. He also wrote lyrics for several of GD keyboardist Brent Mydland's songs in the 1980s, such as "Tons of Steel", "Just a Little Light", "We Can Run", "Blow Away" and "I Will Take You Home". "He was to be admired for that, even emulated".

Barlow moved to CT to attend Wesleyan University, majored in comparative religion, graduated in 1969, traveled and lived in India before returning to the U.S.in 1970.

Barlow was also an online activist. "You have no sovereignty where we gather", Barlow wrote.

Barlow's memoir, Mother American Night: My Life in Crazy Times, will be released on June 5th. The school describes him as a "retired Wyoming cattlerancher" and a father of three daughters-Leah Justine, Anna Winter and Amelia.

Mr Barlow's interest in digital rights grew out of his involvement with the Well - one of the earliest electronic chat forums.
