NASA Exhibits the Most Distant Images Taken by a Spaceship

NASA's New Horizons creates history captures farthest images by any spacecraft

"And now, we've been able to make images farther from Earth than any spacecraft in history". There are only four spacecraft that have ever traveled that far from home: Voyager 1 and 2, and Pioneer 10 and 11.

FILE - This image made available by NASA on Friday, July 24, 2015 shows a combination of images captured by the New Horizons spacecraft with enhanced colors to show differences in the composition and texture of Pluto's surface.

Most of the time, New Horizons is sleeping - hibernating, to save energy. They're also the closest-ever images of Kuiper Belt objects.

As for what the New Horizons spacecraft is going almost 4 billion miles from Earth, NASA reports that it started an extended mission in the Kuiper Belt a year ago.

The U.S. space agency reports in a news release that the New Horizons made the image back in December 2017 using its Long Range Reconnaissance Imager. In February 1990, Voyager 1 was exiting our solar system when it snapped the iconic "Pale Blue Dot" photo - a picture of Earth from over 6.06 billion kilometers away. Astronomer Carl Sagan, who pitched the photo concept, famously remarked: "Look again at that dot". NASA turned on Voyager's backup thrusters in 2017 after almost 40 years of disuse.

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is now one of the most distant human-made objects, and it just took the most distant photograph ever.

Launched in 2006, the New Horizons mission stayed true to its name.

New Horizons is just the fifth spacecraft to speed beyond the outer planets, so many of its activities set distance records.

New Horizons is reportedly healthy and everything is functioning as planned.

It was most recently active between September and December 2017.

The Wishing Well star cluster, pictured December 5, 2017. That was followed up with the shots of the Kuiper Belt two hours later. It performed an unprecedented flyby study of the Pluto system in 2015, offering a dramatic view of the dwarf planet and its satellites. But that will not be true when New Horizons wakes up in August.

After its visit to Pluto, the spacecraft headed out toward the Kuiper belt on its way to its next target, a Kuiper belt object (KBO) called 2014 MU69.

The Kuiper belt object flyby is "not almost as flashy as Pluto", Porter said, but "it's a really unique observation".

New Horizons is going to get nudged out of hibernation again on the 4th of June.
