An Apple iOS source code was leaked online

iOS 11.3 will let iPhone users switch off Apple's performance throttling 'feature'

An Apple's intern posted iOS source code GitHub, yesterday.

The jailbreaking of iOS source code allows the hackers to download and install additional applications, extensions, and themes that are unavailable through the official Apple App store. Rusty Carter, VP of Product at Arxan Technologies commented below.

The code appeared online on Wednesday, and quickly surprised Apple-watchers with just what had been publicly released. iBoot is Apple's bootloader, one of the earliest processes which launches when you first power up an Apple device. However, no one from the group has confirmed leaking the code to any outsiders, and the identities of all five remain anonymous. Similar to a BIOS, iBoot is the part of iOS that performs a series of checks and initializations to ensure a trusted boot of the operating system.

Apple keeps an ultra tight grip on iOS and is not keen on sharing its proprietary code. But it's an obvious confirmation when they reacted so fast and asked GitHub to take down links with propriety and confidential data through the DMCA request. "Having the iBoot source code and not being inside Apple ... that's unheard of".

iOS bootloader The leak could be of value to "jailbreakers" who install third-party software on iPhones and iPads.

We wish we had better news folks... In any case, Apple will have enough time to secure things up and might issue a patch to cover any risks posed by the leak.

With a hack like this, anyone could bypass the security measures from Apple and unlock your phone with it.

"There are many layers of hardware and software protections built in to our products, and we always encourage customers to update to the newest software releases to benefit from the latest protections", the statement from Apple read.

Since the posted version was from iOS 9, it's likely that Apple has additionally made major alterations to the way iBoot works since.

Cyber security expert Amit Sethi from Synopsys said the leak was unlikely to have a major impact on users.

"If the documentation contains some crucial pieces - say file formats, interfaces or even Apple's fuzzing methodology - the impact could be even greater", he told TechNewsWorld.

However, according to the security researcher Will Strafach, for the end users it does not really mean anything positive or negative.
